Dead Sea

The Dead Sea is a hypersaline, or salt, lake that is over 8 times more salty than the ocean. It lies between Israel and the West Bank and Jordan. The Dead Sea is also referred to as Sea of Salt."


The shores of the lake are 1,378 feet (420 m) below sea level making it the lowest place on the earth's surface. The Dead Sea is 1,247 feet (380 m) deep making it the deepest hypersaline lake in the world.

The Dead Sea is 42 miles (67 km) long and 11 miles (18 km) wide. The Jordan River is the primary tributary for the Dead Sea.
